Make it easier to do the right thing
Nobody wants to make mistakes, especially doctors. A common worry when starting out as a brand new FY1 is ‘doing the wrong thing.’
We’re all taught that ‘everyone makes mistakes’ - it’s part of being human. But if we look at what causes things to go wrong, there’s more to be said than just ‘human error.’ Having an understanding of why mistakes occur in healthcare can help us to get things right in the future. This platform was created to help shine a spotlight on human factors, non-technical skills, and learning from mistakes. The aim is to teach new doctors about what can be done to make it easier to do the right thing, what to do when things go wrong, and hopefully dispel some commonly held misconceptions.
Hi
My name is Dr Caolan Stowe
I’m an Anaesthetics trainee in the UK
During my training so far I’ve really come to appreciate the importance of human factors and non-technical skills in ensuring safe patient care and maintaining personal wellbeing at work.
I’ve created this platform to help shine a spotlight on human factors and non-technical skills - to teach new doctors ways to make it easier to do the right thing, learn from mistakes, and build a framework for approaching the challenges of starting out in medicine.
The aim of this project is to provide supplementary educational material to medical students and foundation doctors, relevant to preparing for your first days on the wards as FY1s, and beyond. This is all information I wish I’d known from the beginning. I’m not an expert on the subject - I am still learning as well - but I hope to share some useful tools with you!
